About

Cary BrownMy name is Cary Brown and I am an IT executive with over 15 years of experience in leadership and consulting positions.  Since 2015 I have led the Enterprise Architecture division at Cigna-HealthSpring, leading a team of Enterprise, Business, Solution and Information Architects.  Prior to Cigna I worked for Molina Healthcare, a healthcare payer that arranges for the delivery of healthcare services and offers health information management solutions for over 4 million individuals and families who receive their care through medicaid, medicare, and other government funded programs in 16 states.  My previous positions include the Senior Director of Applications and Enterprise Architecture for WellMed Medical Management, Inc. (now part of United Healthcare) which functions as a provider, payer, and transportation organization primarily serving Medicare eligible seniors.  I am one of the founding members and currently serving my sixth term as board member of the San Antonio HIMSS (Health Information Management Systems Society) Chapter.  For four years I’ve served on the board of the Carrizo Project, a non-for-profit which provides goods and services to the local community and teaches valuable skills to citizens of developing countries like Honduras.  I’ve worked in health care and IT service management industries for the past 16 years assuming both IT and operational leadership positions with start-ups, mid-sized, and enterprise organizations including Baylor College of Medicine, Clarian Health System, Virginia Commonwealth University, and MD Anderson Cancer Center.

My primary experience and passion remains working with new technologies and more importantly applying them to solve business problems .  While technology can add great value to an organization it is important to effectively evaluate existing business processes, end-user work flows, capabilities, and develop strategic goals.  Some areas in which I’ve focused my efforts are:

  • Enterprise Architecture
  • Strategic and tactical IT alignment
  • Program and project management
  • Business process re-engineering
  • Technology outsourcing strategies
  • Wireless and mobile device deployments
  • Web application development
  • Patient Portal Design
  • Enterprise network infrastructures
  • Network Security

Prior to WellMed I worked as a Senior Consultant for Tower Strategies, a strategic healthcare IT consulting company based out of Houston, TX.  Prior to joining Tower Strategies I served as the key technology and infrastructure lead for Conceptual MindWorks, Inc. where I was responsible for the design and operation a highly reliable and secure architecture for an ASP-based electronic medical record startup called Sevocity.  Prior to my work there, I was Director of Operations for a 10k sq. ft. Internet Data Center in San Antonio, TX providing 99.999% high-availability outsourced infrastructure facilities and a variety of managed services.  I also served management and executive positions at HealthAnswers, Inc., a healthcare content and communications company out of Austin, TX that developed the consumer health portal healthanswers.com.

I enjoy the perspective of working in Healthcare IT as there seem to be an endless stream of challenges to overcome.  The satisfaction of using my experience to help organizations leverage technology in support of their business initiatives and strategic goals is what drives me and the work I do.  I’ve been graced with the opportunity to work with several high profile healthcare organizations and work with people who have similar goals for improving patient care and leveraging new and innovative technologies to improve business and operations.
